The Challenge
In the early years of a child’s life, the activities and experiences they engage in significantly shape their cognitive and emotional development, building the foundation for skills and traits that influence them well into adulthood. However, modern parents face a growing challenge: finding content that is both engaging for their children and developmentally beneficial. Since the majority of families don’t own any pets, children tend to engage with smart devices in their leisure time.
With tablets and smart devices becoming integral to children’s lives, the demand for age-appropriate, interactive content that entertains while nurturing imagination, critical thinking, and empathy has never been higher. Yet, this need is not being adequately met, leaving a gap in how children can consume digital content productively.
Research shows that the majority of children aged 3–14 spend their leisure time watching movies and series, with platforms like YouTube dominating their screen time. While this presents an opportunity for entertainment, it also highlights a missed chance for developmental engagement. For parents—58% of whom are millennials, well-educated, and often from high-income households—this gap is exacerbated by their own limited time. Most parents report struggling with reading aloud to their children, finding it neither enjoyable nor feasible due to time constraints.
Parents want their children to use their imaginations and learn during screen time, yet existing content often prioritizes entertainment over education. Children’s programs account for only 13% of their screen consumption, while most families spend their leisure time on general series and films.
This has led to a pressing need for solutions that bridge the gap between passive entertainment and active learning. Our challenge was to create a platform that captivates children with engaging, interactive content while supporting parents in providing a safe, enriching experience.

Our findings revealed that while children frequently watch movies, series, and YouTube content during leisure time, parents expressed challenges in finding age-appropriate, engaging, and educational materials. Moreover, many parents admitted to having limited time or enthusiasm for reading aloud to their children. These insights became the foundation for crafting Oneiro, ensuring the app offered features that addressed both child and parent needs effectively.
