Gurulugomi represents a significant milestone in Sri Lanka’s literary journey, marking the country’s first venture into cloud-based digital reading. Developed for M.D. Gunasena (Pvt) Ltd, one of the most respected names in the Sri Lankan publishing industry, the platform emerged from the company’s forward-thinking approach to embrace digital transformation. As reading habits around the world continued to evolve with technological advancements, there was a growing need to create a modern reading solution that could cater to the changing expectations of readers while preserving Sri Lanka’s literary richness. Gurulugomi was born out of this vision—to bring the joy of reading into the digital space and make Sri Lankan literature more accessible than ever before.
In a world that is increasingly driven by digital experiences, the traditional model of publishing and consuming literature was becoming less relevant, especially among younger generations. M.D. Gunasena recognized the urgency of reimagining the literary experience to match global standards. However, the challenge was not merely to digitize books, but to build advanced platform that could seamlessly integrate Sri Lanka’s literary heritage with modern digital features. The solution had to be inclusive, accessible, and multilingual, supporting Sinhala, Tamil, and English content. Additionally, it needed to serve not only as a reading platform but also as a cultural bridge that could connect Sri Lankans across the globe through a shared passion for literature.
At Treinetic, we partnered closely with M.D. Gunasena to conceptualize, design, and build a digital reading platform that would redefine how Sri Lankans access and interact with literature. From the outset, our goal was to develop a solution that was not only secure, scalable, and advanced but also intuitive and accessible to a wide demographic of readers across the country and beyond. Drawing from user behavior studies and global best practices, we ensured that every feature was carefully designed to enhance usability without compromising on performance or security.
At the core of Gurulugomi is its adoption of the globally accepted EPUB format, which guarantees compatibility across devices and delivers a seamless reading experience regardless of screen size or operating system. But we didn’t stop at format selection; our team invested considerable effort in crafting a personalized and immersive reader interface. Features such as adjustable font sizes, day and night display modes, text highlighting, and easy-to-use bookmarks were implemented to meet the expectations of modern digital readers. These features allowed users to tailor their reading environment to their preferences, thereby increasing overall engagement and satisfaction.
Understanding the limitations of internet access in many parts of Sri Lanka, we integrated advanced Digital Rights Management (DRM) technology that not only protects content from unauthorized distribution but also supports offline reading. This crucial functionality ensures that users in areas with inconsistent or low-bandwidth internet connections can still enjoy uninterrupted access to their favorite books.
In parallel with creating a superior reader experience, we placed a strong emphasis on supporting and empowering creators. Gurulugomi offers a comprehensive digital publishing toolkit, complete with step-by-step guidance and an intuitive backend dashboard that enables both aspiring and established authors to publish their work digitally. This democratization of publishing opens doors for a new generation of Sri Lankan writers to share their stories with a global audience, breaking traditional barriers to entry.
To support the commercial aspect of the platform, we engineered a custom-built payment gateway that facilitates a smooth and secure purchasing experience. Readers can browse an extensive collection of books, make purchases with ease, and instantly access their new content—all within a unified and protected ecosystem.
Behind the scenes, Gurulugomi is powered by a resilient and future-ready technological infrastructure. The platform is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), utilizing auto-scaled Docker containers to manage fluctuating traffic loads with efficiency. All user data is securely stored using encrypted storage solutions, ensuring full compliance with modern data protection standards. Real-time performance monitoring is handled via AWS CloudWatch, which provides actionable insights into system health and usage patterns, allowing our engineering team to proactively manage performance.
we customized the Laravel framework to support horizontal scaling, enabling the backend to seamlessly serve thousands of concurrent users without degradation in speed or stability. This scalable architecture not only supports current demand but is also ready to accommodate future growth as Gurulugomi expands its user base.
To ensure Gurulugomi’s success, we began with an in-depth study of global eReading platforms to understand their functionalities, user experience patterns, and monetization strategies. This research helped identify gaps in the Sri Lankan digital reading ecosystem, particularly around language support, offline access, and relevant content offerings.
Based on research insights, we built the platform from scratch with a focus on scalability, security, and multilingual support for Sinhala, Tamil, and English. We also developed fully native Android and iOS apps with intuitive, user-friendly interfaces optimized for low-bandwidth conditions.
We introduced a locally-tailored Content Management System (CMS) that empowers publishers to easily manage their digital libraries. Additionally, we integrated advanced analytics to monitor user behavior—such as reading time and popular genres—allowing us to make continuous, data-informed improvements.
To ease the transition from print to digital, we implemented a structured onboarding process and provided technical and editorial support. This ensured that local authors and publishers could comfortably adapt to the digital publishing landscape with confidence and clarity.
The impact of Gurulugomi was felt almost immediately. Within just two months of launch, the platform gained impressive traction with over 150,000 installations across Android and iOS and more than 25,000 monthly active users. Its appeal extended far beyond Sri Lanka, with a significant number of users coming from the Sri Lankan diaspora eager to reconnect with literature in their native languages. The platform successfully addressed a market gap by offering a digital reading solution that was tailored for local needs while meeting global standards. Its success highlights not only the demand for digital literary platforms in the region but also the importance of culturally sensitive digital transformation.
Gurulugomi is more than just a digital reading platform. It is a powerful example of how tradition and innovation can coexist to create meaningful change. By blending a deep respect for literary heritage with advanced technology, Gurulugomi has set a new benchmark in digital publishing in Sri Lanka. It has redefined how readers interact with literature, empowered a new generation of authors, and bridged geographical distances to connect communities through stories. As a pioneering platform in the South Asian region, Gurulugomi is well-positioned to continue leading the evolution of literary engagement, inspiring other nations to follow its path toward a digitally enriched reading culture.
